Should he or shouldn't he?

Drama ya'll....

March 2006
OSCARS' STAR NO TO SONG
By Ryan Parry

OSCAR hopeful Terrence Howard has refused to sing at the Academy Awards after other black Hollywood stars urged him not to.

Howard, up for Best Actor for his role as a drug dealer in Hustle And Flow, was invited to sing It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp at the ceremony.

But he pulled out after Sidney Poitier, Will Smith and Denzel Washington warned him it could be harmful to black actors.

Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria, a friend of Terrence, said he wanted to but revealed: "Sidney Poitier said: 'Do not go up there and represent the African American community singing about a pimp'."

Howard, Poitier, Smith and Washington refused to comment.

Rappers Three 6 Mafia will perform a toned down version of the song on Sunday.

I don't think he should sing the song, but not for those reasons. I think the original artists that performed the song should have the floor at that point.

As for the protests from the upper echelon of our acting resume, I don't agree with their attitudes surrounding it.

This song is not about black folks being pimps. It is TIED into the movie's STORYLINE.

That is why the song was nominated. Few and far between are opportunities where a song is so CLOSELY TIED to a movie, is also nominated for an Oscar. This is not the kind of movie that was going to churn out "Love Lift Us Up Where We Belong". The song is titled "It's hard out here" BECAUSE of the nature of the movie.

Ice Cube sung "How to Survive in South Central" for Boyz in the Hood, it was not "I Will Remember You" by Sara McLaughlin.

Certain White folks (for lack of another folks to insert there) are going to think what they want, regardless to whether Terence performs the song or not. I just think that he should sit back and revel in his well deserved nomination, and leave the song to the experts, is all. . .

Sidebar: Eva Longoria is the most hanging out with black folks non black woman in the friggin world.

I'm digusted with the whole thing...why was it even nominated?

If he gets a best Actor nod for playing a Pimp...I'm done...so done!

Forget about it!...Come on...listen to the lyrics...they told Three Six Mafia they could use this or that...but they could say the B word....

These negroes is about to set us back another 50 years with this bullcrap...there is so much more to us than being pimps...didn't we already work hard enuf to prove that?

I'm sure most of the readers don't really care but I'm inscensed

NOW I THINK TERRANCE SHOULD GROW A PAIR AND MAKE THE DECISION HIMSELF. HE DID THE MOVIE SO WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL. SCREW WHAT ALL THE OTHER UPPITY ACTORS THINK. THEY WERE IN THEIR ERA NOW IT'S HIS TIME TO SHINE. IT'S JUST A MOVIE AND HE'S AN ACTOR.

6:02 PM

well, i am watching now....wanna see how this plays out.

oh, and good looking on the Huey's link. next time i need a beignet fix, i am heading up the street! :)

8:11 PM

he's not an artist, he's an actor so NO he shouldnt perform the song.. i dont agree w/ the other actors reasonings behind not singing the song, and i feel that terrance should make up his own mind b/c he's a grown ass man!

I am going to have to respectfully agree to disagree with certain commentaries here.

With all due respect there is really no such thing as particular blacks having 'their' time and there is another person's time. We STILL do not have enough roles to go around, for any race, gender, or character style for black actors so, nobody should have to step aside for anyone to shine. We make room for EACH OTHER; it's what we always have had to do. We don't have to have one black male or female actor being our ambassador for the moment - Let's blow the door wide open. Furthermore, the black actors that advised Terence (which, I disagree with what they said for the reasons mentioned in my first comment), do have enough wherewithall to provide advice for any number of reasons; perhaps, as some say in 'their' era, that would have been unheard of; but again, their opinions are like mines - Everyone has one. So with that said, I don't think we should say that older black actors should set aside their personal beliefs. I do agree that he (terence) did and should make his own decision, but I'm also equally sure that in their day, as has been mentioned things were entirely different and they had to be VERY careful in choosing their roles, how few they were.

As for the song being nominated, I think it's great. I'm not some gangster on the street, nor have I ever been. The song about being a pimp being parallel with black stereotypes has nothing to do with the price of tea in China. Does being a white cowboy mean you are gay? Does being a hispanic mean that you sell oranges on the corner? Does being Asian mean you are good in Math? The best picture winner, Crash, demonsrated how stereotypes are just that; stereotypes.

It's hard out here went up against two other songs: In the Deep, from Crash, and some song from Brokeback Mountain. And it won. As it should have. No because it perpetuates stereotypes, but because it's the best song of the year that ties in to movie that it's attached to, which just happens to be about a pimp.

I am pleased that we can play doctors, pimps, crackheads, attorneys, housewives, accountants, psychopaths and anything in between. It demonstrates our versatility. I say, let's do it. Bottom line is, we just can't run around playing affluent education professionals; fact is, many are not. Let me stop running my piehole. As you were.

I think he should be a leader and not a follower. He DID the movie. DId anybody tell him that was not a good look for a black actor? For his portrayal as a PIMP im even surprised he did get nominated which goes to show the way America is shifting towards Racism. I don't think he shoulda performed the song and I know 36 Killed it and so did Haraji(who I didn't know could sing).

8:35 AM

I'm kinda glad Three Six Mafia got the chance to perform at the ceremony. They made Oscar history.

Even if Howard pulled out, he made something good happen. He gave a black rap group a once in a lifetime chance!

9:18 AM

Did y'all see how 36 Mafia brought it to the table? So refreshing! I loved it. . .

10:04 AM

It's just a movie. It's just a song. He's just an actor. Since (I thought) he performed the song in the movie, it would have been cool to see him perform it live. I think it would have showed his range. My opinion.

BTW -- I think his balls are just fine.

12:12 PM

After watching the Academy Awards, I have to say I'm glad he didn't perform.

9:10 PM

I agree with Sidney Poitier. Regardless of what anyone says, Terrence and that song ARE representing the black community. I'm glad he didn't go up there and sing it.

10:21 AM

Maybe he's one of those Brokeback pimps

5:30 PM

Wow! First Chapelle is rumored to have been pulled to the side by strong-arming community elders and now Terrence Howard? I don't even know where to begin with that.

You are right about that voice of his. It's in such contrast to the masculine image he portrays on screen. But, speaking voice aside, he's one of the only actors out there that moves me with his craft.

12:03 AM

I think he did the right thing. ITs bad enough they won for that crap and you know white americam was laughing. It was a joke like cake on our face. It was a movie song not something we rep on the daily. the Oscars sux.

Excellent, love it! »

Hardware with interesting shapes and patterns are well-suited for this purpose. Mulberry ooutlet sale Also the quality isn't bad at ALL! My little girl already had a blow out and it held up just fine, she is a heavy wetter so I am not *sure* if we will be using them overnight, so we are testing them tonight.
