Debate ya'll

i need ya'll opinion on the following article below:

http://www.maynardije.org/columns/dickprince/060412_prince/

It seems that hampton does not allow braids, dreadlocks and other unusual hairstyles in their 5year masters program. Susan Taylor, Essence editor, has withdrawn from being a speaker at the University.

Suprised the misses and took her to see your boy, Katt Williams, aka "Money Mike". That dude katt needs help, he is truly funny....but what made it even more funny was that Cam'ron decide to get on stage at the end and to make the announcement that Katt Williams signed w/ Dipset. I don't understand it but whatever....they booed Cam'ron...i was really trippin' off that....booed him loudly. We finished that night off at Fellini's..(best pizza joint in the "A") it was packed....

and what the hell is that poster on I-285/Glenwood...RUDY...RUNDU...DURAN...whatever it is...that's crazy...

TRACKS - i copped that the Isley Bros. greatest hits...i tell lil' sarccastik..hands off that's daddy...she tells the misses that now...

i like that rick ross track..."hustlin"...i need to get the charley wilson cd...(i've been saying that for the longest)

lil' sarccastik b'day party is this weekend, all of our focus will be on that...i'm excited for her....what did ya'll do this weekend....

Thanks for stopping by my page -glad you did now I got a new blog to read myself :)

While I agree that it may be "easier" to function in the business world with creamy crack running through your head or a low cut hair cut, it should not be forced upon someone trying to get an education. I don't subscribe to the creamy crack or the straightening comb (all the time) either and I do just fine in the business world. It really is about how you carry yourself. Now if they were telling them they could not have certain hairstyles because of a being a fire fighter and they are unable to don certain equipment, then that would be different. Or if it were the military and they were trying to achieve a uniform look. But even there you are allow to have braids in regulations (and believe me the regulations are specific). I agree with the Essence Editor when she says that they should bring in someone to teach students how to look professional in their personal style vs taking their freedom to have personal style away...

2:24 PM

ok since blogger doesn't want me to comment, lol.
I don't think there's nothing to fuss about over such a policy because I'm a huge supporter of free speech, thought and actions, but I think it's up to an individual to decide if they want to affiliate with an institution or entity that has such policies. because just as so many other things, prohibiting certain hairstyles isn't necessarily offensive to everyone.

2:44 PM

Oh and this past weekend I got my heart broken so I certainly could care less about 'no dreds' in Math 101.

2:45 PM

I believe I should be able to wear my hair any way I want to. It's a personal choice. I understand the school's point of view but I agree that perhaps they should employ an image consultant to teach the students how to take care of locs and/or braids. I find it interesting also that the article states that this issue is bigger outside the University than it is within the University. In other words, if HU students don't feel as though they are being discriminated against, why should we care?

2:47 PM

That's bullshit!!

You know how to get me mad...
Tell me that I can't wear my hair and natural because I'm proud of my beauty and refuse to reform to the Europeam ook because its acceptable.

Like Susan Taylor, I would tell them bitches to kiss my black ass, I'm not reforming for yall....

How can you call what us blacks were born with an "unusual" hairstyle?

You're right its unusual, its unusaul for blacks to wear their natural hair and be proud of it.

That's unusual....

Sorry for venting...

4:14 PM

I am not my hair...educated folks should already know that...

10:05 PM

@ Stilwater: Sorry to hear that.

@ Sarccastik: My hair only acts right ONE way...so if I gotta change it to accomodate...well, I'm just shit outta luck.

10:25 AM

I heard about the "Hampton Hair" incident. That's a shame...

My weekend was very busy.

I hope your little one has a great birthday party!

10:41 AM

I think that is LUDICROUS......Maybe in society but not at school....a HBCU at taht..I'd expect that from Yale or Harvard...

11:17 AM

They are approaching this all wrong.

There are rules and regulations in corporate america.

YES

BUT. . .

They should be regulated on the basis of neatness and precision, not culturally or stylish - based.

They are treading a thin line.

3:10 PM

i agree with p. nuff said. (primarily cuz i had this same discussion at another blog and i'm all talked out about it).

3:14 PM

HBCU banning braid and such, go figure.

Hope lil sar had/will have the best party ever *didn't look at the date on your blog*!

4:55 PM

I understand the banning of braids, but locs is something different, especially if the person is of Rastafaria culture...a HBCU school telling an applicant to change who he/she is? wow!

10:31 PM

On the hair debate it's about being professional and what is acceptable at your place of employment. I think Hampton is taking too hard of a stance but at the same time I understand in our society some hairstyles are considered "ghetto" etc but people shouldn't be forced to wear a certain hairstyle and they should also understand there are consequences to their choices.

4:59 AM

Yeah, I don't agree with Hampton's stance on the hair issue. How you wear your hair has nothing to do with getting your education on. I work in HR for a major corporation & even we don't stress this issue. As long as it is neat, I don't see the problem.

9:37 AM

I got hella toasted this weekend. Only playin'. I relaxed which is a HUGE deal for me. Enjoy the party!

7:48 PM

The HU/hair thing is absurd. I went to Hampton shortly after the G. Bush Sr.-as-graduation-speaker protest where several students refused to participate in the ceremony (to my knowledge the were severely disciplined). Next thing you know, no "non-University sponsored" groups can meet or distribute flyers on campus. Fast forward a few years, and students who peacefully protest the war are in trouble.

This is not surprising to me at all. It's a hot mess down there.
